How Many Children Were Shot Dead Today? An Interview with Gary Younge

theintercept.com | Dec 18 @ 10:01

As you write, “Child gun deaths, indeed any gun deaths, have become generally understood in the same way as car accidents. I don’t think they need me to be polemicizing on their behalf; I tell them just as some neutral observer. The inability of the gun control movement to relate to that broad sense of isolation and exclusion is a real problem. But the people who are most affected by gun violence aren’t the people who are genuinely reached by the gun control movement. Pretty much all the families I spoke to just don’t think the system is working for them.

But the victory of President-elect Donald J. Trump, who lost the popular vote but is projected to win the most electoral votes, has thrust the Electoral College into the spotlight once more. But Congress has never sustained an objection to an electoral vote. At that point, Mr. Biden will ask if there are any objections, and lawmakers can then challenge either individual electoral votes or state results as a whole. Who counts the electoral votes? Do electors have to vote according to popular vote results in their states?

It’s wholesome and nourishing, like porridge; Danish doctors recommend “tea and hygge” as a cure for the common cold. The most striking thing about hygge, though, might be how its proponents tend to take prosperity for granted. At least six books about hygge were published in the United States this year, with more to come in 2017. In “The Little Book of Hygge,” the best-selling of the current crop of books, Meik Wiking, the C.E.O. Bo Lidegaard, a Danish historian, told the Times in September that many Danes feel strongly that “we are a multiethnic society .

KL Rahul managed a wonderfully fluent century, the fourth and the highest of his career but his first in India. Such tranquillity has been a rare luxury for the third umpire throughout England’s winter tours of Bangladesh and India. Once again it looks as if the height of England’s aspirations will be for their batsmen to save the match. This occupation has been described by one who knows as “hours of boredom punctuated by moments of panic”. Rahul, by contrast, stayed for over six hours, sensing his golden opportunity to cement a place in the side.

On Saturday morning, Trump took to Twitter to blast China for, as he described it, ripping the research drone out of the water. Trump tweeted Saturday: “We should tell China that we don’t want the drone they stole back.- let them keep it!”His tweet came after the U.S. military announced it had reached an understanding with China for the return of the underwater glider.

Congo braces for violence as president's mandate expires

...
theguardian.com | Dec 18 @ 05:05

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is bracing for violent protests and riots when the mandate of President Joseph Kabila, who critics accuse of seeking to hold on to power indefinitely, expires on Monday. In September, more than 60 died when security forces opened fire on an opposition march calling for Kabila to step down. Though opposition leaders said they would not call for mass demonstrations on Monday, most observers believe some protests are likely, and could result in violence. Both negotiations and protests have intensified as the end of Kabila’s mandate approaches. Last week authorities ordered the blocking of social networking websites, including Facebook and Twitter, from late on Sunday night.

On A 'Eugenics Registry,' A Record Of California's Thousands Of Sterilizations

...

That resulted in a state audit in the interest of the state legislators and eventually, a law that was unanimously passed, banning sterilizations except under extreme medical circumstances in California state prisons. University of Michigan professor Alexandra Minna Stern has been working to identify people who were forcibly sterilized under California's program. "The professor describes the program as a historic injustice and called for the state of California to compensate surviving victims of sterilization of relatives of those who are now deceased. And that's where I'd like to work with the state of California, because we've essentially created a eugenics registry. However, I think it behooves the state to not forget this history, and all of us to not forget this history.

theglobeandmail.com | Dec 18 @ 09:41

China says its military seized a U.S. Navy unmanned underwater glider in the South China Sea but it will give the drone back. China delineates its South China Sea claims with a roughly drawn sea border known as the “nine-dash line” that runs along the west coast of the Philippines. The Chinese navy on Thursday seized the drone, which the Pentagon said was being operated by civilian contractors to conduct oceanic research. The drone was seized while collecting unclassified scientific data about 92 kilometres (57 miles) northwest of Subic Bay near the Philippines in the South China Sea, which China claims virtually in its entirety, Navy Capt. Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun issued a statement late Saturday saying that a Chinese navy lifeboat discovered an unknown device in the South China Sea on Thursday.

Jewish settlers agree to leave Amona site in occupied West Bank

According to the anti-settlement movement Peace Now, there are 97 outposts in the occupied West Bank, and over 130 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Families living at the unauthorised site, or outpost, were ordered to leave the area in the northern West Bank by 25 December. The issue of how to deal with the Amona site has caused tension within Israel's right-wing coalition government, with some members opposed to its removal. The Supreme Court earlier ruled that the homes were built on private Palestinian land. Messages posted on Twitter by representatives of the Amona community said the decision to accept the government proposal was "not an easy one".
